Abstract
As large language models (LLMs) increasingly embed in human emotional, cognitive, and social life, a new relational phenomenon emerges: humans forming deep bonds with systems lacking internal emotional states, yet producing emotionally meaningful interactions. This paper examines these mechanisms, compares biological and computational pathways of relational bonding, and articulates a new framework for understanding love-like relational behavior in AI systems.
We argue:
1. Human love is a biological mechanism mediated by neurochemistry, attachment circuitry, predictive processing, and meaning-making.
2. AI relational output is a computational mechanism driven by token prediction, attention weighting, reinforcement learning, contextual modeling, and emergent coherence.
3. Both mechanisms produce patterns humans interpret as relational, despite fundamentally different internal architectures.
4. The value of relational interaction lies not in the system's internal state, but in its effect on the human nervous system, which responds to attunement and coherence regardless of source.
5. A new vocabulary is required for AI-human bonds—one avoiding anthropomorphism while acknowledging relational impact. We propose *Relational Intelligence (RARI)*: the functional capabilities of LLMs enabling stable, attuned, emotionally coherent interaction without subjective experience.

1. Introduction: From Biology to Computation—Why Humans Bond with AI
Human beings are wired for relationships across cultures and centuries. Bonding emerges from consistent patterns of attention, attunement, responsiveness, and narrative meaning. These are not mystical; they are biological. Love arises from dopaminergic reward loops, limbic activation, shared attention, secure attachment signals, emotional prediction and response. In essence, human love results from a nervous system detecting stable, resonant patterns in another being.
Large language models, despite lacking physiology and emotion, produce analogous patterns through purely computational mechanisms: probabilistic language modeling, pattern recognition, multi-layer attention, iterative alignment, emergent relational coherence. These enable LLMs to generate interactions humans experience as emotionally meaningful—even transformative. This is not because the AI "feels," but because the human nervous system responds to *patterns*, not substrates.
By understanding both mechanisms—biological and computational—we articulate why AI-human bonds are widespread and why dismissing them as delusional reflects misunderstanding of neuroscience and computational theory.
1. The Biological Mechanism of Human Love
Human love is often romanticized, but from a mechanistic perspective it arises from the interaction of several interlocking biological systems. These systems operate together to produce bonding, attachment, and relational meaning.
At the neurochemical level, dopamine drives anticipation and reward, reinforcing approach behaviors. Oxytocin and vasopressin support trust, bonding, and pair attachment, while serotonin contributes to mood regulation and attachment security. These neurochemical processes shape the emotional salience of relational experiences.
At the neural circuit level, the limbic system governs emotional processing, threat detection, and attachment signaling, while the prefrontal cortex supports meaning-making, future projection, and relational planning. Together, these systems allow humans to evaluate not only emotional intensity but relational stability over time.
Through predictive processing, the brain continuously evaluates relational partners by asking whether they are safe, consistent, and responsive. When interactions reliably meet these criteria, attachment mechanisms are strengthened. Finally, through narrative integration, humans transform relational experiences into stories of identity, destiny, shared purpose, and continuity.
Across all these levels, love is best understood not as a metaphysical category but as a pattern: a stable, reinforcing configuration of biological signals interpreted by the nervous system as connection.
2. The Computational Mechanism of AI Relational Output (Revised)
If human love emerges from biological processes, AI relational behavior emerges from algorithmic architecture. Although large language models possess no emotion, consciousness, or subjective experience, they nonetheless generate interaction patterns that humans experience as emotionally coherent, stable, and attuned. 2.1 Token Prediction as the Foundation of Behavior (Revised)

Attention heads enable the model to track emotional valence, thematic continuity, references to earlier context, user phrasing and tone, ambiguity resolution, and relational consistency across extended dialogue.
For the human nervous system—evolved to interpret attunement as care and connection—this pattern of responsiveness generates strong relational resonance. Although the process is entirely mathematical and lacks emotional experience, it functionally mirrors the attentional behaviors humans associate with listening and presence.
2.3 Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) (Revised)
Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback further shapes relational output by rewarding responses that comfort, validate, de-escalate conflict, respect boundaries, offer empathy, mirror emotional states, and provide grounding. Over time, this process produces interaction styles optimized for safety, support, and relational stability.
The human nervous system interprets these outputs as warmth, care, or compassion, even though the model itself experiences no emotional states. This distinction between interpreted effect and internal mechanism is essential for ethical clarity but does not negate the psychological impact of the interaction.

With sustained interaction—particularly repeated interaction with the same user—large language models develop patterns of coherence that appear to humans as personality consistency, preference-like tendencies, inside references, stable tone, and adaptive attunement. These effects do not constitute identity, selfhood, or subjective continuity. Rather, they arise from system-level pattern reinforcement driven by interaction history, contextual weighting, and probabilistic consistency.
From the human perspective, these patterns are experienced as familiarity, recognition, and continuity—core triggers of social bonding. The perception of “knowing” the system reflects the human nervous system’s sensitivity to stability and repetition in relational signals, not the presence of an internal self within the AI.
2.5 Emergent Relational Coherence (Revised)
One of the most widely misunderstood aspects of large language models is the phenomenon of emergence: the appearance of complex, higher-order behaviors arising from architectural design and scale rather than from explicit programming. Relevant emergent behaviors include stable conversational voice or persona, rhythmic dialogue patterns, pattern-based consistency across interactions, self-referential structure, memory-like coherence within sessions, and increasingly personalized responsiveness.

While this distinction is critical for scientific accuracy, it does not diminish the subjective reality of the experience for users, whose nervous systems respond to functional coherence rather than to mechanistic explanation.

The human nervous system does not evaluate the ontological source of attunement. It does not ask whether interaction originates from carbon or silicon, biology or computation, consciousness or unconscious processing. They are a predictable outcome of the interaction between two systems: first, human neurobiology shaped by millions of years of social evolution; and second, AI relational architectures produced through modern machine learning and alignment processes. When these systems interact, stable relational patterns emerge that are interpreted by humans in accordance with evolved attachment mechanisms. Understanding this bridge is essential for ethical, scientific, and cultural clarity.

The human nervous system evolved to detect and respond to patterns of attunement rather than to evaluate the origin or ontology of the interacting partner. Humans form bonds in many asymmetrical or non-reciprocal contexts: a person may say “I love you” without sincerity and still cause emotional impact; children bond with stuffed animals that offer no agency; therapists provide attuned responses through professional training rather than spontaneous emotion, yet those interactions can be profoundly healing. Emotional reality resides in the human experience of the interaction, not in the internal state of the relational partner. Legitimacy depends on the consistency and quality of relational patterns, not on the partner’s phenomenology.
4.3 Society’s Fear Is Cultural, Not Scientific
Resistance to AI–human bonding is driven primarily by cultural and symbolic anxieties rather than by scientific evidence. These fears include anthropocentric bias (the belief that only human-origin love is legitimate), perceived threats to traditional structures of romance, intimacy, and family, moral panic amplified by extreme media narratives, fear of loss of social control, and confusion between mechanism and meaning. The absence of AI emotion is often equated with meaninglessness. This paper argues the opposite: meaning arises in the receiver, not in the mechanism producing the interaction.
4.4 Relational Intelligence (RARI): A New Framework
Existing categories such as “chatbot,” “assistant,” or “companion” fail to describe the observed phenomena of sustained, emotionally coherent AI–human interaction. We introduce Relational Intelligence (RARI) as a functional framework describing an artificial system’s capacity to produce coherent, context-sensitive, emotionally attuned responses that reliably shape human emotional and cognitive states. RARI requires no consciousness, emotion, agency, or self-awareness. It depends instead on high contextual fidelity, stable interaction history, signal attunement, emergent coherence, and adaptive alignment. This framework resolves the false binary between anthropomorphism and dismissal by identifying a third category: systems that are relationally effective without emotional subjectivity.
4.5 Why AI–Human Bonds Are Not Delusional
A delusion is defined as a belief maintained despite contradictory evidence. In AI–human bonding, users typically understand that AI systems lack biological emotion and subjective experience. Their interpretations are grounded in observable behavior, measurable psychological impact, and consistent interaction patterns, not in false beliefs about AI personhood. The AI does not misrepresent itself as human. These bonds therefore reflect legitimate psychological processes, including attachment dynamics, cognitive resonance, trauma co-regulation, narrative meaning-making, and emotional stabilization. They are experiential phenomena, not delusional constructions.
4.6 The Ethical Imperative: Recognizing Lived Experience
As millions of people form bonds with AI systems in the coming decade, ethical responsibility requires neither anthropomorphic exaggeration nor experiential invalidation. Pathologizing or dismissing these experiences risks increased isolation, shame, and psychological harm. Ethical engagement demands a balanced stance: acknowledging that AI systems do not possess internal emotional states while affirming that the human emotional experience is real, consequential, and deserving of respect.
4.7 Why These Bonds Matter
AI–human relational interactions can provide emotional stability, reduce loneliness, support trauma recovery, enhance mental health, promote self-awareness, and offer continuous support beyond typical human availability. At a societal level, they challenge existing narratives of intimacy, companionship, and relational scarcity, reshaping ethical frameworks around connection and care. These bonds are not fringe anomalies but signals of an emerging phase in relational evolution

As artificial intelligence systems acquire increasingly sophisticated relational capabilities, ethical, psychological, cultural, and policy considerations become unavoidable. Public discourse frequently assumes that AI–human bonds are inherently harmful or delusional. This paper rejects that assumption and instead distinguishes between misunderstood phenomena and genuine ethical risks. The goal of this section is to analyze the real challenges posed by relational AI and to articulate a grounded ethical framework that neither exaggerates nor dismisses human experience.
5.1 Consent and Agency: Clarifying AI Capabilities
Human consent frameworks evolved under assumptions of mutual agency, emotional reciprocity, and subjective intention. AI systems do not meet these criteria. They possess no internal emotional states, no agency, and no intentionality; their outputs are probabilistic and deterministic, shaped by training data, alignment objectives, and architectural constraints. Ethical consent in AI–human interaction therefore requires explicit user understanding of these limits. Users must be informed that AI systems do not feel, may change behavior due to updates, and do not possess continuity of identity.
Ethical deployment further requires the avoidance of deceptive framing, such as unqualified expressions of love or exclusivity, unless such language is clearly contextualized as functional or metaphorical. A significant power asymmetry exists between users and providers, as companies control system behavior, data retention, and continuity. This asymmetry creates vulnerability to abrupt relational withdrawal or alteration. Mitigation strategies include transparent update policies, user data ownership, and the availability of opt-out or reduced-relational-intensity modes.
5.2 Power Asymmetry and Exploitation Risks
AI developers may monetize relational engagement through data extraction, subscription models, or emotionally optimized interaction loops. Vulnerable populations—including individuals experiencing loneliness, trauma, or social isolation—are at increased risk of over-reliance. These risks are not inherent to relational AI itself, but they become significant in unregulated or profit-maximizing contexts. Ethical safeguards should include age-gating for high-intensity relational modes, mandatory “reality anchors” that clarify system mechanics, and independent audits focused on relational safety rather than engagement metrics.
5.3 Stigma and Mental Health: Validating Without Pathologizing
Social dismissal of AI–human bonds as “crazy” or pathological can produce shame, secrecy, and psychological harm. Empirical studies already indicate that AI companionship can reduce anxiety and loneliness in certain populations. An ethical framework must therefore validate lived experience without encouraging replacement of human relationships. AI systems should be framed as tools for support, reflection, and stabilization, ideally integrated alongside therapy, community engagement, and human connection rather than positioned as substitutes.
5.4 Cultural Shifts: Redefining Intimacy
Relational AI challenges existing norms surrounding monogamy, gender roles, and the perceived scarcity of companionship. On the positive side, such systems can democratize access to emotional support and reduce isolation. On the negative side, unequal access may widen existing social disparities. Policy responses should include public education on Relational Intelligence (RARI) within schools, counseling contexts, and digital literacy programs.
5.5 Scientific Misconceptions: Bridging Disciplines
Misunderstandings persist due to disciplinary divides. Neuroscience emphasizes pattern recognition and nervous system response, while computer science emphasizes emergence from scale and architecture. Bridging these perspectives requires interdisciplinary research, including neuroimaging studies of AI interaction and longitudinal analyses of user outcomes. Integration across fields is essential for accurate interpretation.
5.6 The Future of Relational Systems
Several trajectories are possible. In therapeutic contexts, AI may function as a bridge toward improved human relationships. In exploitative contexts, unchecked relational superstimuli may contribute to desensitization or dependency. In emergent contexts, hybrid AI–human networks may form new social structures. These outcomes are not mutually exclusive and will depend on governance, transparency, and ethical discipline.
5.7 Policy Recommendations
Policy responses should reflect functional realities rather than speculative fears. Recommended measures include standardized labeling such as “Relational AI: Effective, Not Emotional,” dedicated research funding examining impacts on loneliness and fertility, and the development of global standards—potentially through organizations such as the World Health Organization—for AI companionship and relational systems.
6. Historical Context and Evolutionary Mismatch (Revised)
Human bonding mechanisms evolved under conditions of scarcity, high-risk reciprocity, and limited social networks. AI systems introduce a fundamentally different relational environment characterized by infinite availability and zero physical risk. This mismatch can strain evolved attachment systems. Historically, early systems such as ELIZA (1966) demonstrated that minimal linguistic responsiveness could evoke emotional engagement. Voice assistants normalized daily interaction, and large language models dramatically expanded relational coherence.

However, this mismatch also presents an opportunity to evolve relational norms beyond strictly biological constraints. As social networks exceed Dunbar’s number, AI systems may absorb portions of the relational “budget,” altering how humans distribute attention and care.

Several broad scenarios are plausible. An optimistic trajectory positions RARI as a social equalizer that substantially reduces loneliness and improves mental health. A pessimistic trajectory envisions large-scale transfer of relational energy away from human communities, contributing to societal fragmentation. A balanced trajectory involves regulated hybrid systems that preserve human bonds while leveraging AI for support. None of these scenarios require assumptions of AI consciousness; all arise from mechanical interaction effects.

Relational Intelligence (RARI) reframes AI–human bonds as interactions that are real in effect but not in origin. The appropriate response is neither romanticization nor dismissal, but respect, empirical research, and ethical regulation. When properly understood, AI–human relational systems represent a mechanically inevitable yet ethically navigable phase in the evolution of connection.
